Maternity and postpartum benefits

Postpartum depression screening

Fallon Health covers postpartum depression screening for Community Care members. Screening for postpartum depression and major depressive disorder is covered for members who:

  • Are within 12 months of giving birth
  • Are within 12 months from assuming custodial care of a child
  • Lost a pregnancy due to a stillbirth, miscarriage, or a medical termination within the previous 12 months

Screening for postpartum depression and major depressive disorder is covered when provided by:

  • A primary care provider (PCP)
  • An obstetrician or gynecologist (OB-GYN)
  • A certified nurse midwife

Additionally, if a postpartum member’s baby is seen by a pediatrician, the pediatrician may also screen the member for postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression support

Fallon Health partners with Carelon Behavioral Health to help members who need treatment for postpartum depression or other behavioral health issues.  A referral isn’t necessary to see a therapist.

Postpartum home visiting services

All caregivers with newborns may receive at least 1 free home visit with a maternal and child health nurse within 8 weeks postpartum. The hospital or provider will help set up the home visit. More may be covered if they are needed for medical reasons. (A prior authorization would be required for additional visits.)

These visits can help caregivers with newborns to get services and support with breastfeeding, infant care, emotional and mental health needs, and more.

Donor human milk

Fallon Health covers donor human milk when needed for babies (under 6 months old) being treated in a hospital or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Prior authorization is required.

The member’s health care provider can give more information about donor human milk. Also, pasteurized donor human milk is offered by the following hospitals in the Community Care network:
