What are routine eye exams?

Routine eye exams may include tests, examinations or dilation to:

  • See the inside, outside and surrounding areas of your eyes
  • Measure the pressure of your eyes
  • Evaluate how well you see objects—up close and at a distance
  • Determine if you need a prescription for glasses or contact lenses
  • Detect diseases or conditions

Routine eye exams are usually provided by an optometrist, a licensed professional who performs examinations and screenings to diagnose and treat conditions and diseases of the eye. They also prescribe medicines and eyewear.

Find a routine eye exam provider

To find a routine eye care provider, go to EyeMed's provider search page:

  1. Enter your ZIP code.
  2. Select your plan.
  3. Select other options that might be important to you (not required).

Specialty vision care

As a Fallon member, you’re also covered for specialty eye care to treat an eye condition or injury. Your plan may require a referral or preauthorization, so be sure to check with us before scheduling an appointment with a vision care specialist.

Specialty vision care is usually provided by an ophthalmologist, a medical doctor who specializes in eye surgery and who can also perform eye exams, diagnose eye diseases and disorders, and write prescriptions.

Find a vision care specialist

To find a vision care specialist:

  1. Visit our Find a Doctor tool.
  2. Scroll down to the "Advanced Search" section of the screen.
  3. Enter your ZIP code, then click "Specialist" under "What type of health care provider are you looking for?" Choose "Ophthalmology" from the drop-down menu.
  4. The search results will indicate whether or not routine eye exams are available.

Go to the Find a Doctor tool ⇒

Eyewear and corrective lenses

Fallon members under the age of 19 receive discounts on eyeglass frames, eyeglass lenses and/or contact lenses:

Eyewear and corrective lenses prescriptions are usually read and prepared by an optician, a professional who is trained to read prescriptions and fit eyewear and other devices to correct eyesight.

To learn more about your specific eyewear benefits, check your Schedule of Benefits, your Summary of Benefits or your other plan materials.
